If you haven’t already heard about A Degree In Nonsense – it’s the brand new, extraordinarily entertaining, and wonderfully produced podcast from the mind of Josh Hobbs. The program is dedicated to the pursuit of interesting, yet trivial, information that can excite our creativity, inspire an audience, and stimulate thoughtfulness. But if he thought that the topic of zombie research was trivial; we were well-prepared, and more than happy, to help change his mind!
Our resident survival expert, official epidemiologist, and Advisory Board member Cameron Carlson recently joined Josh to discuss all things undead. In “Outsmarting the Mindless” they examine our three foundational principals, consider the Cordyceps fungus, and analyze the ever-evolving “terror de jour” of our time. Somehow clocking in at just under twenty minutes; this very brief interview is still incredibly insightful, and most definitely worth a listen!
I’ve always been taught to turn my weaknesses into strengths. Obviously, spending time to learn things that might be considered “useless” in a practical sense isn’t good if it’s disrupting important practical accomplishments. But that does not mean it is of no value. If everything we devoted ourselves to in life was consequential, we’d loose our mind. There is need for unstructured inconsequentiality (a term that I coin myself ;P).
I have made this podcast as a way to receive entertaining, interesting, yet trivial information that excites our creativity, and stimulates thoughtfulness. This way, you can do your practical things, but indulge in fun nonsense with me at the same time.
It’s a great podcast, but don’t be fooled; zombie research is anything but “fun nonsense”! The Zombie Research Society itself is completely dedicated to the science, survival, and culture of the living dead. Our official Advisory Board consists of academics, experts, epidemiologists, and neuroscientists fully committed to the scientific study, research, and application of real world solutions to the inevitable zombie apocalypse. So it’s not nonsense, but it is pretty fun!
In fact, we have a lot of fun! And to his credit, Josh recognizes that “everyone enjoys a good zombie discussion.” In addition to “utilizing the zombie craze, people can interact in an engaging way with emergency preparation, and get some real-world benefits out of it.”
Due to the bite-sized servings offered up by A Degree In Nonsense, casual listeners may miss important details. But for those paying close attention, Josh Hobbs has a wonderful ability to distill all of the vital information into a twenty-minute course on almost any arcane or obscure subject imaginable; from “Kooky Commerce” and freaks of nature to weather manipulation.
