Cameron Carlson continues his review of the last few items provided by Valley Food Storage including a couple hearty meals guaranteed to provide some warmth and sustenance during the horribly cold, bleak, and inevitable zombie apocalypse – prepare for Apocalypse Yum!
- Smell: Not surprisingly, freeze dried meat doesn’t offer an appetizing aroma. They look almost exactly like the tiny bits of sausage you’d get on a frozen pizza, but don’t provide any of the mouth-watering tingle, smell of spice or pepper, that you might expect. In fact, you’re much more likely to smell the plastic Mylar bag than the pork crumbles contained within.
- Taste: Obviously there isn’t much taste to these pork crumbles straight from the bag. However, once you re-hydrate, drain, and let them sit for a while as suggested… they taste pretty good! Following the directions actually provides the best results; go figure! However, we found that adding them to some of the other Valley Food Storage products like the Irish Pub Cheddar Potato Soup or Mango Habanero Chili added a much deeper flavor profile.
Irish Pub Cheddar Potato Soup:
- Smell: This is powder; plain and simple. You won’t get much from the smell other than a fine dust that reminds you of potatoes, and perhaps a faint hint of cheese. It isn’t exactly mouth-watering, but you’ll have a good idea of what you’re in for based on the fumes alone.
- Taste: At first it might seem a bit runny, but let it settle. Because once it sits for about five minutes as recommended, it’ll thicken right up; and boy is it delicious! This tasty Irish Pub Cheddar Potato Soup from Valley Food Storage actually tastes like potatoes that have been boiled and perfectly seasoned with a hint of cheese. Perfect for the cold zombie apocalypse!
- Smell: Warning; do not inhale the contents of this bag! While this particular package of chili from Valley Food Storage provides an extremely appetizing aroma, it also contains a dangerously spicy habanero powder that made us choke up. Not for the faint of heart!
- Taste: This Mango Habanero Chili sticks to your ribs! There is no meat, but guess what? If you have the Pork Sausage Crumbles, simply add them to the mix and it’s something else entirely. As far as survival food goes, this is at the top of the list! When you take the first bite, it’s sweet; but there’s also a savory taste akin to rosemary or sage. After it lingers, the habanero kicks in and you’ll get that little bit of zip before it finishes with another bit of sweetness that remains until the final bite. This is great stuff; I would highly recommend it!
Overall Impression: Unlike the freeze dried fruits and vegetables from our previous reviews; these products aren’t meant to be eaten straight from the bag as a snack. But that’s actually much better, because these particular items from Valley Food Storage are a real feast! They’re much more filling, and will provide a warm, comforting meal on those cold apocalypse nights.
In Closing: We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again; Valley Food Storage is miles ahead of their competition. These emergency rations are way more flavorful and fresh than any other MRE on the market, perhaps because they eliminate all the preservatives, hydrogenated oils, MSG’s and other ingredients that limit the nutritional value, shelf life, and taste that you want.
In fact, the team at Valley Food Storage stand behind their products 100% and offer every new customer a free sample – you just pay shipping! So we recommend that you swing by their website, take a look around, and stock up on any survival food that catches your eye.
