We’ve all heard the myth that a dog’s mouth is actually much cleaner than that of a human. But a bite from either one can carry a huge amount of dangerous bacteria. And during the inevitable zombie apocalypse, even a single bite can be deadly! So how does a bacterial infection spread throughout the body, and where is the worst location for a zombie bite?
Many symptoms of an infection are actually the result of our own immune system including fever, heart palpitations, and confusion. Commonly known as sepsis, this life-threatening condition occurs when the body causes damage to its own tissues and organs. So if you die of sepsis during the zombie apocalypse; congratulations – your own body killed you!
Septicemia or bacteremia, on the other hand, is the presence of bacteria in the blood itself. Often caused by skin wounds, such as a zombie bite; this dangerous bacteria is alive, capable of reproducing, and spreads quickly to other parts of the body. When you can literally see the zombie infection spreading through your veins, it’s a clear sign of hematogenous spread.
Septicemia [is] the presence of infective agents or their toxins in the bloodstream, popularly known as blood poisoning. It is characterized by elevated body temperature, chills, and weakness. Small abscesses may form on the surface of the body and red and blue streaks become apparent along the pathway of surface blood vessels leading to and from the site of the primary infection.
One of the reasons that animal bites are so dangerous is that they often occur on the fingers or hands, which actually have a harder time fighting infection. And according to research by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, human bite wounds cause nearly one-third of all hand infections. So be extremely careful when you’re literally holding the undead at bay!
And forget about your post-apocalyptic body armor, because most bite injuries involve the hands; and hand wounds have a higher rate of infection than any other location. Instead, we recommend that you invest in a trusty pair of bite resistant gloves. Whether they’re meant for animal bites or rusty kitchen knives, just throw a pair in your bug out bag and be prepared!
If you’re fighting off wild animals, scavenging for food, or simply holding back the snapping jaws of the living dead; it’s your hands that are the most susceptible to a bacterial infection. So make sure you’re protected, and be ready… because what you don’t know can eat you!
Good stuff.
