At a recent event in Cannes, the production company behind the hugely successful Resident Evil film franchise officially announced their intention to adapt the series for television! In addition to a number of other properties including Mortal Instruments and Perfume, executive board chairman Martin Moszkowicz of Constantin Film confirmed that the undead would be shambling onto the small screen soon.
While very little is known about the upcoming Resident Evil series; the move comes amid a transition for the German company as they continue to shift their focus from international film production to English-language television dramas.
“Constantin has a lot of feature film brands and we are moving them into television. For instance, we own the rights to the book series ‘The Mortal Instruments,’ and we just hired a showrunner in Los Angeles, and our offices in Los Angeles and Canada are starting production next year on at least two or three international shows…”
Rumors of a Resident Evil reboot have been spreading for a while now. And although it’s unclear whether this new television program will return to the survival horror of the original video game series or continue the action oriented adventure of the previous motion pictures; one thing is certain… fans will have to wait until the studio launches its sixth, and presumably last, Resident Evil film to find out.
Unofficially subtitled The Final Chapter, the production suffered a few minor setbacks including the happy announcement that actress Milla Jovovich was expecting her second child. However the final film is now well underway and currently in pre-production with an expected release date sometime late next year; after which zombie fans can eagerly begin awaiting more news of Constantin Films official Resident Evil television series!
