The upside of swine flu is that although it’s highly contagious, it weakens as it spreads. The upside of bird flu is although it’s very deadly, it doesn’t pass between people easily. But combine the worst of both, and you have the perfect super-virus that could literally bring civilization to its knees.
Now New Science Magazine reports that we could be seeing just that, as the bird flu evolves to infect pigs. Ab Osterhaus of the University of Rotterdam comments:
“If the virus continues to adapt to pigs it will spread like wildfire”
Because humans are biochemically similar to pigs, this bird/swine viral highbred could move quickly across the global population, killing 60 percent of those infected.
Imagine hundreds of millions of people dead in the United States alone. Imagine store shelves empty and public services shut off. Imagine a public health catastrophe so widespread that the rule of law collapses. Sound familiar?
Just another indication that your zombie survival skills may be tested in many situations, not just when the dead rise.
