Our friends at the DeadMen Talking podcast recently discussed the danger to our nation’s power grid during the inevitable zombie apocalypse. And according to a recent article from the Rocky Mountain Institute, an entrepreneurial think tank based in Colorado, communities with microgrids will stand the best chance for survival due to their ability to provide reliable power with very little human oversight.
…imagine you’re in a community with a microgrid that integrates renewable energy systems such as solar PV or wind, energy storage (e.g., batteries), and smart grid controls. What happens when people (but hopefully not you or us) start turning into zombies? With the right combination assets, the community’s microgrid could run on its own for days, weeks, or possibly even years … all with technology that is commercially available today!
Ultimately, the United States’ power grid is vulnerable to a number of catastrophic emergencies including natural disasters and terrorists attacks. However by reinventing our electricity system and looking to microgrids, we may also find a way to better prepare our communities for the walking dead!
