THE HIDDEN BRAIN by Shankar Vedantam

Because it’s widely believed that zombies are primarily driven by their brains, an understanding of human brain function is crucial to developing a working model of the undead.  To that end, Washington Post science writer, Shankar Vedantam, offers unique insights about the power of our unconscious mind in his latest book, The Hidden Brain.

Venantam argues that autonomy is a myth, because knowledge and rational intention are not responsible for our choices.  He draws on the latest psychological research to show that our lives are controlled by powers that we an not aware of.  In that way, we are much more like “unthinking” zombies than we ever before imagined.

In addition to focusing on our dependence on learned instinct to jump to instant conclusions, Venantam also discusses the strange and powerful role that group dynamics play in choices that were previously believed to be individual in nature.

Though The Hidden Brain stops short of discussing brain physiology, it is still and interesting resource for zombie researchers interested in getting as full an understanding of the undead mind as humanly possible.
