FIRESTARTING – FORGET THE FLINT

Many of us have never been in a situation where we’re going to have to start a fire in the wilderness. However, this is a survival column, and this is a survival video. So, today I have brought you a simple (and fun) way to start a fire with nothing but a 9-volt battery and some steel wool. Let’s get started!

As many of you saw in the video we did for Microsoft and Xbox with the ten tips to survive the apocalypse, one of those tips were to carry batteries; specifically, a 9-volt. Why? Because a 9-volt has two contact points on them, it will discharge an electric charge into a conductive surface when touched. Now, for all the material you will need.  Steel wool.  Now, this cannot just be any steel wool; you are going to need super fine steel wool. The super fine threads of the steel will allow the wool to burn and the spark to spread very quickly. Below are the items you are going to need for this:

  1. 9-Volt Battery
  2. 0000 Super Fine Steel Wool
  3. Kindling (Paper, Dried Leaves, Wood Shavings, Etc.)

That’s it! That is all you need. When you start this process, spread out the steel wool, so there is plenty of space between the fibers to allow it to burn hotter and quicker. Once you have done this, place your kindling on top of the steel wool into a neat pile which will catch when the sparks touch it. When you are ready, take the 9-volt and touch ANY part of the steel wool and watch the magic happen; it’s that simple! When the kindling has caught fire, feel free to add gradually larger pieces of fuel and build your fire.
