It’s been 30 years since the events that pushed Ash to the brink of insanity. Trying to get his life together has involved him laying low, but not forever. A deadite plague threatens to extinguish all human life on earth, and our unlikely hero must rise once again to face his demons – both personal and literal.
Bruce Campbell reprises his role as The Evil Dead’s Ash Williams, and Sam Raimi is producing and writing (as well as directing the first episode). Returning as well is co-producer of the original Evil Dead series Rob Tapert.
In an Entertainment Weekly interview, Campbell described where his character is in his life:
Ash has survivor’s guilt. You could have a heyday with his PTSD. He’s a war vet. He continues being a trash-talking know-it-all who doesn’t really know anything. He’s the ultimate anti-hero. He’s kind of an idiot, but man, if I had to go to battle, I’d want to be next to that guy, because he’ll bring it if he has to.
Filming has begun on the 10 part (30 minutes each) series in Penrose, New Zealand, for the Starz Network, with the first episode in the can. Raimi commented on how much he enjoyed being back in New Zealand with his long-time partner Rob Tapert (who is married to Lucy Lawless, who will also be starring).
Raimi teases us with this quote from Variety:
Evil Dead has always been a blast. Bruce, Rob, and I are thrilled to have the opportunity to tell the next chapter in Ash’s lame, but heroic saga. With his chainsaw arm and his ‘boomstick,’ Ash is back to kick some monster butt. And brother, this time there’s a truckload of it!
The storyline for Ash vs. Evil Dead is being kept under tight wraps, so we will have to wait until this fall to discover what monster butt Ash is going to have to kick. But what would you like to see? How would you write the script? Let us know!
