May is Zombie Awareness Month.
Supporters are encouraged to wear a gray ribbons to signify the undead shadows that lurk behind our modern light of day. From May 1 through May 31, concerned citizens take this small step to acknowledge the coming danger we will soon face.
Why is May is Zombie Awareness Month? Many films important to the evolution of the modern zombie are set in the month of May, most notably George Romero’s original 1968 zombie classic Night of the Living Dead.
Also, despite common misconceptions zombies are not connected with the late October pagan tradition of Halloween in any way. Witches, ghouls and vampires, all Halloween staples, are otherworldly creatures of old, filled with mysticism and superstition. By contrast, zombies are biological entities, made of flesh and blood, and functioning under the same laws of science and reason that all worldly beings must.
So get your zombie awareness gear and spread the word!

NOTE: Gray ribbons are used to support other important causes as well, just like all colored ribbons across the spectrum. For example, the purple ribbon has been adopted by no less than eighteen different institutions to draw attention to everything from animal welfare to Alzheimer’s disease. Zombie Awareness Month is in no way connected to any other awareness month.
